4 Qualities of Successful People You Should be Emulating

Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffet — what do they all have in common?

They all shared success, but that’s just where their similarities begin.

It’s no secret that successful people have qualities that you possess, too. Yet the difference is that they harnessed those qualities in extraordinary ways throughout their ordinary, everyday life situations.

But alas, there is hope. We’ve come up with a list of four qualities that successful people have in common, along with a few tips you can use to inspire your inner Bill Gates.

1. They hold themselves accountable.

Successful people don’t blame their failures on others. From their actions to their decisions, they own up to their behaviors and look for ways to learn from their experiences. Even if something doesn’t go the way they planned, they tackle their own responsibilities.

Tip: Next time something doesn’t go the way you plan, take a step back and reflect on what happened, learn from it and put it in the back of your mind. Keep in mind the lesson, but don’t get bogged down by your failures. Accountability is important in teams, too. If you’re the leader of a group, teach your team accountability by setting expectations and being an example.

2. They create information instead of consuming it.

Successful people believe in providing others will valuable information and insights. Creating information can be just as important as consuming it.

Tip: While one of the most important things you can do is learn from others, you can also be that source to other people. It’s beneficial to spend some time listening to podcasts or reading articles, but don’t limit yourself. Create something of value for others. Especially when it comes to networking, give something back.

3. They find a specific focus.

Imagine being good at everything. Sure, it’s a nice idea, but instead of dabbling in many areas and fields, successful people find a specific focus and stick with it. There’s value in narrowing your focus and channeling your energy toward a precise objective. Instead of doing a fair job at everything, be a master at one thing.

Tip: If you’re having trouble finding a distinct focus, consider your priorities and where you’re already devoting your time. The most important 20 percent of your activities should receive nearly 80 percent of your time.

4. They infuse enthusiasm.

There are few things more contagious than enthusiasm. Being successful and exuberant can mean inspiring those around you. If you’d do your job for free, chances are you’re on the right path.

Tip: Enthusiasm involves a certain level of energy. If you’re feeling overworked or overwhelmed, you could become burned out. Be conscious of how you’re spending your time, and look for joy in situations around you.
